Volunteer Services

The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is a national program that recognizes accomplishments in service. The national program is run by the AmeriCorps program and the Points of Light Foundation. Atlanta Korean American Senior Association (AKASA) is an official certifying agency for this award. Anyone over the age of five who has completed the required number of hours for their age group is eligible to apply for the PVSA through Atlanta AKASA. We are currently accepting an application for volunteers for high school students and beyond. Please note that you do not need to complete your service hours with AKASA in order to apply.

Local Food Distribution for Seniors

“Empowering Asian American Seniors Together”

Atlanta Korean-American Senior Association (AKASA) has collaborated with the Atlanta Community Food Bank on a food distribution program since June 2012. This program aims to provide food assistance to individuals and families who are struggling with food insecurity. This program serves several important purposes for the Korean American Senior Association and the community at large. Collaborating with the Atlanta Community Food Bank helps the Korean American Senior Association increase the amount of food they are able to distribute to seniors in need, especially in Asian American communities.

By partnering with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, AKASA is able to expand its reach and distribute a larger quantity of food to seniors in need, particularly within Asian American communities in Gwinnett, Fulton and Dekalb County. Recognizing the success of the program, AKASA is actively planning to broaden its food distribution efforts by establishing partnerships with additional food distribution suppliers such as H-Mart, GW Supermarket, Kroger, and Publix in Gwinnett County. As the number of program participants continues to rise, AKASA requires additional personnel to meet the growing demand for food distribution services. Consequently, the organization is in the process of hiring a part-time program coordinator and multiple part-time staff members who will be dedicated to working extended hours, ensuring that participants receive the necessary support. Currently, AKASA operates two vans and a personal mini-van for distribution purposes. However, in order to enhance efficiency and manpower, the organization intends to consolidate its existing distribution vehicles into a single 26-foot truck.

With this strategic approach, our collaboration with community partners and the utilization of larger vehicles, our food distribution program is poised to make a substantial impact. We anticipate reaching over 750 individuals on a monthly basis, ultimately benefiting nearly 10,000 minority residents in Gwinnett County. This expanded reach will allow us to provide essential food assistance to a significantly larger number of people in need, making a meaningful difference in their lives.
